ST. CLAIRSVILLE – For the first time in school history, Morgantown has enough girls to field a golf team, and the Mohigans have hit the jackpot.

At the second annual OVAC girls golf tournament on Wednesday, Morgantown finished at the top of the 16-team field with a score of 350, 23 strokes better than Fort Frye, which won last year's inaugural tournament at Crispin Golf Course in Oglebay Park.

“This is the first year that enough girls can compete as a team,” Said Morgantown head coach Christian Root. “That was our goal. It was a really exciting year.”

Freshman Angela Yao of Morgantown also earned a medal in a field of 99 players with an outstanding score of 71 (1 under par), one stroke ahead of Olivia Baker of St. Clairsville, who won the medal in 2023.

“Angela has shown excellent performances all year long and she continued that trend today,” Root noticed. “I'm really pleased with her game and happy to have her on our team.”

This was Yao's first time playing on the 18-hole course in eastern Ohio.

“It was quite hilly, but in very good condition,” Yao said about the course. “I had no expectations when I came here other than to have fun, and I did.”

In addition to Yao, other Mohigan scorers were Evyn Trembush (88), Kayleigh Kellogg (89) and Claire Keudzerski (103). The fifth member of the team was Caroline Keudzerski (105).

Root said two of his players played 18 holes in a tournament for the first time ever.

“Very satisfied. All the girls have done the work needed to be successful.

It's amazing that Angela is playing under par.“, added Root. “Evyn, another freshman, shot a personal best. It was fun to watch them.”

In addition to Yao and Baker, Maddie Potts (81) of Wheeling Central, Kallie McKeegan (81) of Edison and Kohen Coursen (83) of Fort Frye also received All-Conference laurels.

Due to course conditions, the tournament was moved from Crispin this year.

Columbiana was third with 387, Edison (402) and Marietta (406) rounded out the top five. John Marshall (408) was sixth, St. Clairsville (412) seventh, Wheeling Central (415) eighth, Warren Local (428) ninth and Southern Local (441) tenth.

Other placings were taken by Brooke (455), Caldwell (459), Beaver Local (462), Wheeling Park (475), River (491) and Weir High (541).

East Liverpool, Martins Ferry and University each had only three players, while Monroe Central and Shadyside each had two. Barnesville, Frontier, Harrison Central, Heartland Christian, Oak Glen, Union Local and Wellsville each had one.
