The stabbing incident took place around 7.30 pm when a Ganesh immersion procession was passing by the victims' house and an argument broke out between the two brothers and four of the participants – Tausif Yakub Ansari, 25, Karan Ganesh Shinde, 26, Nikhil Kalyan Kamble, 19, and Roshan Narendra Shirmulla, 26, who reside in Ramji Nagar and Barve Nagar in Bhatwadi in Ghatkopar West. All four have criminal records and have numerous cases pending against them. In fact, they had attacked and killed a friend of the victims, Sushil Sonawane, in 2020, for which they went to jail and were released a few months ago. Since their release, there have been frequent verbal altercations between the four and the two brothers. However, on the day of the immersion ceremony, the clashes took a deadly turn when the accused pulled out the knives they were carrying and began to stab the brothers indiscriminately.

Paresh was stabbed 15 times in the head, chest and hand while Prathamesh was stabbed four to five times in the head, stomach and hand. Both were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where Paresh died during treatment, a Crime Branch official said.

A police team visited the hospital, recorded Prathamesh's statement and registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against the four accused. The Crime Branch Unit 7 started investigation in parallel. After the victim revealed the names of the accused, the police managed to arrest the accused Karan Shinde from Ghatkopar and then Nikhil Kamble, Tausif Ansari and Roshan Shirmulla from Sakinaka area. After medical examination, they were handed over to Ghatkopar police for further action. A case was registered under Section 103(1) (murder), 109 (attempted murder), 115(2) (causing hurt to person), 351(3) (criminal intimidation by killing or causing grievous bodily harm) and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

All four accused are notorious in the area and have been involved in several crimes in the past. Karan Shinde is the leader of the group and has nine cases pending against him at Ghatkopar police station, including assault, grievous bodily harm and three cases of attempt to murder. Roshan Shirmulla has four cases pending against him, including two cases of attempt to murder, one case of molestation and one case of assault. Ansari and Kamble also have cases of attempt to murder and grievous bodily harm pending against them respectively.
