Seven people have already died in the forest fires. The latest report from the Civil Protection Agency (ANEPC) put the number of deaths at more than 50. The fight against the forest fires is in full swing. More than 5,300 firefighters, civil protection personnel and soldiers are currently deployed.

The fires are raging near Guimarães. This is also where footballer Ana Maria Markovic lives with her boyfriend, ex-GC star Tomas Ribeiro, who is under contract with Vitória Guimarães SC. On Instagram, the Braga player, who is often referred to as the “most beautiful footballer in the world”, shows dramatic video scenes.

She speaks exclusively to 20 minutes about the terrible forest fires in Portugal. The weather is actually really nice, but you can't see any of it. “The whole air is full of smoke and soot particles. The air tastes of fire!” says the 24-year-old. And she continues: “It really stinks. I find it hard to breathe.” That's why Markovic is currently wearing a respiratory mask: “I don't want to ruin my lungs.”

The footballer, who moved from GC to Braga in the summer, said it was “really bad”. “Yesterday the fire was very close to my house. “I was very scared,” Markovic told 20 minutes. “I tell you, if the fire nearby had not been put out, we would have slept in a hotel.” But it didn't come to that.

The forest fires are still raging, but no longer in the immediate vicinity of Markovic's home. The camp is improving. She also goes to training despite the dirty air. “We train outside,” she says. Then the Braga star praises the efforts of the firefighters and says: “We brought them water, food, energy drinks and protein bars.” They are doing an incredible job.”
