Houston ISD Police Chief Shamara Garner speaks about the stabbing of a student at Sterling High School on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

Two high schools in Houston were temporarily locked down on Wednesday after knives were found on students; one of the incidents ended in a stabbing.

A 16-year-old boy was stabbed during a fight at Sterling High School in the southeast part of the city, according to Houston ISD Police Chief Shamara Garner. The student suffered two wounds on the left side of his body. He was conscious when he was taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, Garner said.

The 17-year-old boy suspected of stabbing his classmate has been arrested, Houston ISD said. The altercation occurred around 10 a.m. The school lifted the curfew around 12:30 p.m. and the school day continued as scheduled, although Sterling allowed students to be picked up early by their parents.

“This was an isolated incident,” Garner said. “It's always very unfortunate when something like this happens. We are grateful that we had an officer on the scene who was able to immediately assess the situation and bring it under control.”

Elsik was sealed off immediately after the incident, but resumed normal operations in the afternoon.

“Please be assured that we always take these types of situations seriously and investigate them fully,” Alief ISD said in its statement. “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students and staff.”
