The introduction of the so-called RepairBONUS has now begun on the Spree. The capital city subsidizes the repair costs of electrical appliances with a maximum of 200 euros.

The aim of the program is to provide financial support for the repair of electrical appliances in private households in order to extend the effective service life of the devices. This should not only help to reduce the amount of electronic waste generated, but also reduce the consumption of important raw materials. Berliners can now apply for the funding online.

Funding for private individuals

The RepairBONUS covers up to 50 percent of the repair costs, but a maximum of 200 euros. To receive the subsidy, the repair must cost at least 75 euros. For repairs in so-called repair cafés, spare parts are covered at up to 100 percent of the cost, provided they are at least 25 euros. Repairs in commercial businesses such as craft businesses or electrical retailers as well as in non-commercial establishments such as repair cafés are supported.

Applications are made exclusively online via the application portal of IBB Business Team GmbH, which is familiar with the implementation of the program. Funding can be applied for until the end of 2024. The prerequisite is that the applicant has their main residence in Berlin and is at least 18 years old. The list of eligible electrical and electronic devices also includes smart watches and smartphones.

Focus on the environment and local economy

With the program, Berlin wants to make a contribution to waste prevention and resource conservation. At the same time, the local economy, especially craft businesses and specialist shops, is to be strengthened. The RepairBONUS is part of the country's zero-waste strategy and supports the right to repair adopted by the EU, which aims to extend the useful life of products.

In developing the program, Berlin is drawing on the experiences of other federal states such as Thuringia and Saxony as well as similar funding models in Austria. 1.25 million euros are available for 2024. Whether the program will be continued in 2025 depends on the available budget funds.
