10:15 a.m. Radar check and warning review; Afternoon outlook: The Alabama Weather Blog

We still have a band of rain extending from northwest Alabama southeast through the Birmingham metro to Auburn. From downtown Birmingham to the north, the rain intensity has decreased. This is a welcome change from some of the worst-hit areas, including Moulton. The area of moderate to at times heavier rain extends roughly from east of Birmingham to west of Oxford along I-20 and then south through Waldo, Ashland, Alexander City, Dadeville and Opelika.

Current information:

  1. Flood warning until 1 p.m. for the following counties: North Central Alabama, Cullman,
Limestone and Morgan. In northwest Alabama: Colbert, Franklin AL, Lauderdale and Lawrence.
    • Due to the decreasing and heavier rainfall, the flash flood warning for parts of this area has been lifted and replaced by this area-wide flood warning to cover the ongoing flooding.
    • Spoke to a friend of mine in Moulton who had to find an alternate route due to numerous roads being flooded. Emergency management is reporting flooding along Crow Branch, just west of Market and School Streets.
  2. The flash flood warning remains in effect for parts of Cullman and Morgan counties until 10:30 a.m. The local flood warning also remains in effect for this area until 1 p.m.
  3. Flood warning for Blount, Jefferson and St. Clair counties until 10:45 a.m.
  4. Flood warning for Coosa, Shelby and Talladega counties until 10:30 a.m.
  5. Flood warning for Clay and Tallapoosa until 1 p.m.
    • This is the latest warning issued and applies to the area currently receiving the heaviest rainfall.

The forecast:

Flood warnings remain in effect for much of north and central Alabama. NWS Huntsville is extending the warning through tonight. It was mentioned in the discussion that the warning could be extended if heavy rain develops again and continues through the night. NWS Birmingham has extended the warning through Sunday morning.

In the afternoon, the concern is that daytime warming will increase convection along the rain band, which is forecast to move a little further west. Varying amounts of rainfall are possible over the next 24 hours and everyone should remain alert. It will be difficult to say where the heaviest areas of rain will form and as long as this tropical moisture is present, widespread showers and storms are possible.
