Ahmedabad: A 28-year-old farmer from Kotada Sangani taluka in Rajkot was arrested by the Ahmedabad city traffic police on Wednesday in connection with the hit-and-run case on. Science City Street on September 15th.
The accident involved a 38-year-old woman, Jeevu Bhalgariya, and her 12-year-old son Pritraj, who were run over by a speeding car while walking on the side of the road. The injured mother-son duo sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.
Police arrested Jaydeep Vaghasiaa resident of Kotada Sangani Taluka in Rajkot, after he surrendered to them on Wednesday.
Police Inspector PB Jhala of the A Division Traffic Police said that during initial questioning, Vaghasia confessed to having brought his brother-in-law, who was suffering from cancer, from Rajkot to a private hospital in Sola. Vaghasia told the police that he had suffered from sleep deprivation for three nights while attending to his hospitalised brother-in-law.
Vaghasia also told police that the accident happened when he was on his way to a hotel to freshen up and rest. “Vaghasia told us that he dozed off while driving. Then he suddenly realized that he was about to hit pedestrians on the road. But instead of braking, he pressed the accelerator, which caused the accident,” said Jhala.
Before Vaghasia surrendered, he had his brother-in-law discharged from the hospital and sent him and his sister back to Rajkot.
The complaint filed by Jeevu's husband Ranjitsinh Bhalgariya states that the family parked their two-wheeler and decided to walk towards Science City Circle on Sunday evening (September 15). Between 7:30 pm and 8 pm, while they were walking near the Shreeji Party Plot junction, Jeevu and Pritraj were hit from behind by a reckless car coming from the direction of Shukan Mall Crossroads and ran them over. Ranjitsinh managed to pull his wife and son out from under the car before the driver fled towards Bhadaj Circle.
Video footage from the accident scene shows the speeding car veering to the left and hitting the mother-son duo who were walking on the side of the road. Jeevu sustained injuries on his head, forehead and back, while Pritraj sustained injuries on his head, abdomen, chest and limbs.
Inspector Jhala said that according to the attending doctor, the victims were recovering well from their injuries.
