Chris Carter found guilty of sexually abusing two teenagers

A St. John's musician and former bar owner has been convicted of repeatedly sexually abusing two teenagers over a three-year period.

37-year-old Chris Carter was supposed to look after the girls while their mother worked.

But in reality, he abused them at every opportunity. And when they didn't comply, he punished them – taking away their phones, cutting off their Wi-Fi access, and even denying them food until they gave him what he wanted.

And that included everything from sexual touching to forced oral sex and intercourse. Both girls estimated that this happened to them independently dozens of times between 2018 and 2021.

When there was a threat of prosecution, Carter threatened them and demanded that they deny everything and retract their statements to the police.

Carter, meanwhile, denied everything and suggested that there had been a secret agreement between the girls and their mother.

The judge, however, was not convinced and described Carter as a scheming, selfish person who could not be trusted.

The victims, whose identities cannot be confirmed, were in the courtroom this morning, surrounded and supported by their families, to hear the judge say he believed them, not Carter.
When the verdict was read out, initial concern and uncertainty turned into tears of relief.

Carter, who was released on bail, was immediately taken into custody pending sentencing in November.
