Anger and fear in Beirut after ‘massacre’ – while Hezbollah MP warns of ‘punishment’

Special correspondent Alex Crawford was in front of the American University Hospital in Beirut, where there are many more patients than beds.

Friends and relatives are still outside, crying and shocked, she says.

One man reported seeing a “massacre” in a southern suburb of Beirut, with all of the victims, he said, being civilians.

Hezbollah MP Hussein Hajj Hassan told Crawford: “Israeli aggression will not go unpunished. If the Israelis believe that this aggression will stop us from defending Gaza, then they are living in an illusion.”

Crawford says there is “obviously great anger within the Hezbollah hierarchy.”

“But I also think there is a lot of concern among ordinary people here – who don't necessarily support Hezbollah or its involvement in this war – about what will happen next,” she says.

“They have seen what has happened to women, children and other civilians, including medical workers, in these public places and they fear that this is just a harbinger of further attacks.”

She adds: “In recent months and weeks we have seen that the Israeli forces have targeted Hezbollah commanders. This is, in my opinion, a whole new dimension.”
