Four dead and 14 injured in house collapse in Delhi's Karol Bagh

NEW DELHI: At least four people were killed and 14 others injured when part of a house collapsed in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area on Wednesday morning, a senior Delhi Police official said.

The deceased were identified as Aman (12), Mukim (25), Mujib (18) and Mohsin (26), all from Khatanagar village, Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. Except Aman, all three were engaged in manufacturing women's shoes.

According to a Delhi Fire Service official, the department received a distress call about the collapse of a house in Prashad Nagar, Karol Bagh at 9:12 am and five fire engines were immediately rushed to the spot.

At the same time, the fire brigade was also notified and sent five firefighting and rescue vehicles to the scene of the accident. There, the firefighters discovered that part of a five-story old building had collapsed and several people were trapped under the rubble. A rescue operation was immediately initiated.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsh Vardhan said the ill-fated 25-square-metre building was located within the Prasad Nagar police station premises.

“We rescued 18 people from under the rubble and shifted them to a nearby hospital. Four of them were admitted dead,” the DCP said, adding that local police along with other agencies carried out the rescue operation, which lasted till 5.30 pm.

Rescue workers, including teams from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), manually cleared the debris to find people trapped under the rubble.
