Notes on the PC version of GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption

A leak provides current information about PC versions of GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption. GTA 5 for the PC could also receive an update. This unofficial information can be found in mysterious folders that were discovered during a launcher update.

Unintentional revelations at Rockstar Games

During an update of the Rockstar Games Launcher and Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC, folders accidentally appeared that indicate some expected but not yet directly confirmed developments: As RockstarIntel three reported (via PC Gamer), folders with names that are clear to those in the know were discovered: “Americas”, “GTAV Gen9” and “Red Dead Redemption”.

The “Americas” folder is particularly interesting because “Project Americas” is the internal codename for Grand Theft Auto 6. This could be an indication that a PC version of GTA 6 is in the works, even though the game has only been announced for consoles so far – there is little doubt that GTA 6 is coming to PC, the bigger question is when.

Red Dead Redemption for PC

The “Red Dead Redemption” folder has once again fueled rumors about a PC version of the 2010 western game. There were already hints of a possible port last May when the game was released for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The repeated mention in the files gives fans hope that they will soon be able to experience the first game in the series on the PC.

The “GTAV Gen9” folder hints at a possible upgrade of Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC. “Gen9” refers to the current generation of consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S). PC gamers have been waiting for over two years for content and features like Hao's Special Works, career progression, and GTA+ that are currently only available on the latest consoles.

Rockstar insider Tez2 speculates on X (formerly Twitter) that development of this PC update may have already begun earlier this year. He also sees a connection with the recent integration of the BattlEye anti-cheat system in GTA Online for PC: “The introduction of BattlEye could be seen as preparation for the arrival of the Gen9 version on PC.”

Leak discovered – and removed

The mysterious folders were first discovered by X-user @saiyambansal100. Many players were able to confirm the existence of the folder in their own installations before Rockstar Games responded. In an update to the Rockstar Games Launcher, the telltale folders were removed for users who had not yet downloaded the update.

This isn't the first time Rockstar Games has attracted attention through unintentional leaks. In September 2021, a similar launcher update revealed the existence of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which was officially announced shortly after.
