Italy's 1990 World Cup hero, Salvatore Schillaci, has died at the age of 59

Legendary Italian striker Salvatore ‘Totò’ Schillaci, who captured the hearts of a nation at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, has tragically died at the age of 59.

The news of his death was confirmed on Wednesday morning by the Palermo Civico Hospital. He had won a battle against colon cancer.

Schillaci’s rise during the 1990 World Cup was simply extraordinary.

Although he had only played once for the Italian national team before the tournament, he quickly became a key figure, scoring six goals and winning both the Golden Shoe and Golden Ball awards.

His performances contributed significantly to Italy's third place and his name became synonymous with the “Magic Nights of Italy 1990”.

“Totò was a great player, a symbol of unwavering will and redemption,” said the president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina.

“His football was full of passion. And this fearless spirit made him loved by all and will make him immortal.”

Schillaci's influence extended far beyond the football pitch, with his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering determination resonating with fans across Italy and beyond.

His goal celebration, characterized by jumping for joy and energetic fist-balling, became the cult image of the tournament.

“Thank you for the emotions you have given us, for making us dream, cheer, hug and wave our tricolor,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media.

Following his World Cup heroics, Schillaci went on to have a successful club career, playing for teams such as Juventus, Inter Milan and Jubilo Iwata in Japan.

His legacy would live on not only as a football legend, but also as a symbol of Italian pride and resilience.

As a tribute to Schillaci, a public viewing will take place at the Renzo Barbera Stadium in Palermo before his funeral.

The city and the nation mourn the loss of a beloved personality who brought joy, inspiration and unforgettable moments to countless fans.
