A suspicious package discovered Monday in the Iowa Secretary of State's office was one of several targeted shipments sent to election officials across the country.

The packages were deemed harmless by authorities and sent to offices in various states in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma.

What happened in the Lucas building?

The Iowa State Patrol told the Register on Monday that the patrol was called to the Lucas Building at 321 E. 12th St. around 11 a.m. to respond to a suspicious package.

The fire department's hazmat team examined the package and determined it was not dangerous, Sergeant Alex Dinkla said Monday.

Ashley Hunt, spokeswoman for the Iowa Secretary of State's office, said the office reopened shortly afterward and normal business operations resumed. The secretary of state's office had no further comment Tuesday.

What does the FBI say about the mailings?

The FBI wrote in a statement that it is working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to investigate a number of suspicious mailings in states. The FBI is still determining how many letters were sent, who is responsible for sending them, and what the motive behind the letters was.

“Some of the letters contained an unknown substance and we work closely with our law enforcement partners to respond to each incident and safely collect the letters,” the FBI wrote. “Because this is an ongoing matter, we will not comment further on the investigation, but the public can be assured that safety is our top priority. We also want to remind everyone to be cautious when handling mail, especially from unknown senders. If you see anything suspicious, please contact law enforcement immediately.”

Have other states evacuated buildings?

Several of the suspicious packages delivered to officials in states such as Kansas also prompted evacuations. Officials in Oklahoma said the white powdery substance in a “suspicious envelope” was flour, the Associated Press reported.

Since the 2020 election, U.S. election officials have been subjected to frequent threats. The U.S. Department of Justice responded in 2021 by establishing an Election Threats Task Force to counter the sharp increase in threats and harassment.

Last November, suspicious packages were sent to election officials in Georgia, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington – some of which contained traces of fentanyl.
