2-year-old who left her family's house after bedtime died in car crash

Police in Michigan are investigating after a toddler was struck and killed by a car on Friday. The toddler had apparently left home after being put to bed.

According to a statement from Michigan State Police, “a two-year-old girl got up from her bed and left the house” while her parents were working on the family's home in Allen Township, a small community about an hour southeast of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Police were called at 8:20 p.m. for a “car-pedestrian collision” and found the young child in the street. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he “succumbed to his injuries,” according to the statement.

Officials believe the toddler ran into the road and was struck by a 38-year-old man driving a 2012 VW Jetta. They said alcohol and drugs did not play a role in the accident and did not say whether the driver will face charges.

The driver's name was not publicly disclosed by MSP.

An autopsy of the child will be performed, the Jackson Post Troopers said in a press release, and the investigation is ongoing.
