League of Women Voters encourages young people to vote

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – From the national to the local level, political leaders believe every vote counts.

September 17 was National Voter Registration Day, and the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford set up booths at Roosevelt and Belvidere North high schools in hopes of registering more than 100 voters.

Carol Bailey, chair of the electoral service, says: “Voting is complicated and therefore not easy. When young people think about voting, they are overwhelmed not only by the decisions they have to make, but also by the preparation for those decisions. We not only offer the opportunity to register, but we also answer questions.”

According to Democracy Watchdog, fewer and fewer people are voting and the credibility of elections is declining.

Dr. Teresa Kruger, a teacher at Belvidere North, says, “I think we need to show them and give them the opportunity to show that if they are unhappy with something in our country, they have the power to make a change, and that is at the ballot box.”

If you are 18 years old on November 5, you can register to vote.

Bailey urges young voters to maintain their registration and explains that they will have to re-register if they move.
