A British nursing student who was trapped under a quad bike after it drove off a cliff in Corfu is warning holidaymakers to stay away from these “death traps”.

Maddy Morris was visiting her family on the Greek island last month when she and her friend suffered a horrific accident just one day into the trip – on her birthday.

The 24-year-old was knocked unconscious when she fell off a cliff, falling nearly three metres before the rental bike landed on top of them and knocked her unconscious.

The nursing student, who lives near Manchester, says she has no idea why the vehicle suddenly veered off its lane, suggesting a mechanical failure or uneven terrain may have been the cause.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said in a stark warning to others. “As I was falling, I had visions of people I loved.”

After the incident, Maddy and her friend were picked up by passers-by on the side of the road and taken to hospital with numerous injuries.

Maddy said she was “glad to be alive” after the accident – ​​and advises other young people to stay away from quads when on holiday.

Maddy said, “We were only going 20 miles an hour, so we weren't going fast or anything.”

“I was driving and my friend was sitting in the back.”

“The day of the accident was actually my birthday,” she said.

“We were on the trail for about an hour and a half and were pretty high up, but far from the edge.

She said there was quite a lot of traffic on the road, so they drove slowly.

“We just unexpectedly fell over the edge of the cliff. Luckily we landed on a ledge as the cliff sloped down to the sea.”

Maddy said she had ridden a quad before and knew how to drive it.

“It was very unexpected,” she said.

“We were thrown and fell down a 7-foot-deep precipice until the quad landed on top of both of us.”

“We don't know if it was because of a defective bike, the rough terrain or because we lost control of the steering.”

Maddy and her friend were trapped under the quad for several minutes until some passers-by managed to lift the vehicle away from them.

Maddy said: “You never think something like this could happen to you. I must have passed out because I remember waking up on the floor – it was very scary.”

“The wheels were still turning when it was over us and I think that's why I suffered so many injuries on my left side.”

“I managed to squeeze out a little way through a gap as we were both trapped underneath. We were trapped for a few minutes.

“Luckily there were people behind us who were able to push the quad away from us. We could easily have fallen even further.”

“I’m so glad I wore my helmet.”

Maddy was badly injured and bruised after the accident. She had suffered a broken shoulder blade and other superficial injuries.

Now the student is warning others to stay away from quad bikes after she nearly lost her life last month.

“I didn’t have insurance and I learned my lesson: we had to pay for the treatment.”

“We were charging ourselves up because we wanted to enjoy the rest of the week. It ruined my birthday.”

“I will never get on a quad again. I thought I would be OK because I've ridden a quad before – and it's just the norm out there, everyone rides one. I thought I was safe.”

“I wouldn't advise anyone to rent a quad bike. They're death traps. My helmet definitely saved my life.”
