Bronx man arrested and charged with manslaughter in fatal assault

BRONX, NY — A Bronx man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal attack that occurred last month, according to the New York Police Department.

Daquan Jackson, 29, of 15 West Mosholu Parkway North, was arrested at the 44th Precinct around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday morning. Jackson was charged with first-degree manslaughter.

The arrest follows the investigation of an incident that occurred on Sunday, August 4, 2024. Police responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress at 7 West Mosholu Parkway North in the 52nd Precinct. Upon arrival, officers were advised that 58-year-old Benjamin Bernal had been struck in the head by an assailant, causing him to fall to the ground. Bernal, a resident of 1050 Anderson Avenue, was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Bernal succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

  • Police seek suspect after armed robbery at Brooklyn store

    BROOKLYN, NY — The New York Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying a suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus earlier this month.

    According to police, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at approximately 12:35 a.m., an unknown individual entered a business premises located at 302 9th Street. The suspect displayed a firearm and threatened a 35-year-old male employee. The individual then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register and stole a cell phone from the victim before fleeing the scene on foot eastbound on 10th Street.

    No injuries were reported in the incident.

    The suspect is described as a slim man. He was last seen wearing a black ski mask, a colorful jacket, a black hoodie, blue jeans, white sneakers and a black garbage bag.

    Police urge anyone with information about the suspect's identity or whereabouts to contact authorities while the investigation is ongoing.

  • Maryland State Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash in Worcester County

    WHALEYVILLE, Maryland – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday evening on U.S. Route 50 in Worcester County.

    The victim was identified as Jason Irizarry, 40, of Dover, Pennsylvania. Irizarry was operating a BMW motorcycle at the time of the accident. He was initially taken by ambulance to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and later to ChristianaCare Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    Another rider, Andrew Strube, 49, of Columbia, Pennsylvania, was also involved in the crash. Strube, who was operating a second BMW motorcycle, was taken by ambulance to TidalHealth for treatment of his injuries.

    According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 50 westbound at Hall Road. Irizarry was reportedly passing another vehicle when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a railing. Strube, who was riding with Irizarry, also lost control of his motorcycle as a result of the accident.

    While authorities investigated, all lanes of Route 50 were closed for about four hours.

    Maryland State Police are asking anyone with information about the accident to contact Berlin Barrack at 410-641-3101. The investigation is ongoing.
