Bellingham woman charged with attempted murder of relative after stabbing reported

On Friday, September 13, police arrested a Bellingham woman on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident involving a family member.

The incident occurred at a home on Donovan Avenue. According to Megan Peters of the Bellingham Police Department, the family member was able to get out of the home and get help from a neighbor.

Caroline Dietzgen, 40, allegedly stabbed an adult family member without warning at about 12:48 p.m. Friday, Peters said. When the family member left, she barricaded herself in one of the rooms and injured herself.

Bellingham police entered the home and were able to take a knife from Dietzgen's hands. Emergency responders then treated her on the scene and took her to St. Joseph Medical Center. The family member was also hospitalized.

Dietzgen was arrested on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and attempted criminal mischief. After being medically evaluated at the hospital, she was taken to the Whatcom County Jail, where she remains in custody.

No information was provided on the victim's condition.
