Dog that attacked cyclist apparently bit another person as a puppy

BEAUFORT COUNTY, NC (WITN) – Authorities say a dog that attacked a woman during a charity bike ride last weekend apparently bit another person as a puppy.

Beaufort County Animal Control continues to investigate Saturday's attack on Idalia Road outside Aurora. A 56-year-old woman was hospitalized with severe stab wounds to her lower leg when the German Shepherd came out of the owner's yard and bit the cyclist, according to witnesses.

WITN has learned that this is not the first time animal control has investigated a dog attack at this address. The county says that in 2015, a 1-year-old German Shepherd named “Zeus” bit another person who was being treated at an emergency room in Craven County.

Beaufort County believes the same dog was involved in both biting incidents.

The district said it does not expect any charges to be filed in this case until Saturday.

Beaufort County has an ordinance against dangerous dogs. A spokesperson said the county is still in the process of doing so, which includes a hearing before the Beaufort County Dangerous Dog Board.

The woman injured on Saturday was treated and released from the hospital, according to her friends.
