Charges filed against suspect in police dispute in Farmington Hills

Charges have been filed against a Farmington Hills man accused of holding police at bay and shooting at them with a rifle last weekend, officials said.

Dejuan Patrick Evans, 32, was charged Monday by the Oakland County District Attorney's Office with three counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of possession of a firearm by an unauthorized person, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, six counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a serious crime (incident) and one count of domestic violence.

Court documents Tuesday said Evans had not yet found a lawyer and did not have one listed for him.

If convicted, he faces life in prison for the first-degree murder charge, up to five years for the first-degree possession of a weapon charge, up to four years for each of the first-degree assaults with a dangerous weapon charges, five years for the first-degree possession of a weapon charge, and up to 93 days for the first-degree domestic violence charge (a misdemeanor).

Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald said the charges against Evans stem from an incident involving a concealed weapon at a Farmington Hills home on Sunday.

Around noon, police were called to the home in the area of Middlebelt and 12 Mile Road for a domestic dispute and assault. They said Evans allegedly attacked a woman and threatened to kill her in front of her children.

One of her children called 911, officials said. The woman told police when they arrived that Evans had attacked her, authorities reported. Her children remained in the home.

Officers attempted to make contact with their suspected attacker, who then pulled out a rifle and fired at police, authorities said. They attempted to detain the suspect, and he allegedly barricaded himself in the house with the two children, officials said.

Police retreated, took cover, and called other law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, for assistance.

Investigators said the two children eventually fled the home and the suspect appeared at the front door with a rifle. They said he fired at officers again, hitting several homes and police vehicles. A SWAT team sniper returned fire, hitting the suspect with a single shot, authorities said.

The police immediately provided assistance and took him to a hospital, it was said.

Prosecutors said Evans remains in custody and is being guarded at the hospital.

“The officers placed themselves in immediate danger and risked their own lives to save the lives of the victim and her children,” McDonald said in a statement. “I commend the quick response of the officers who ended this extremely dangerous situation. My office's top priority is public safety, and we will prosecute individuals who threaten the safety of our community and the lives of others, including children and police officers, to the fullest extent of the law.”
