Former President Donald Trump was scheduled to hold a town hall meeting in Michigan on Tuesday as part of his ongoing election campaign after again heaping praise on Secret Service agents who apparently foiled an assassination attempt on his Florida golf course.

The agency has come under fire for allowing the suspect, armed with an assault rifle, to get within a few hundred yards of Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday. The incident came two months after Trump was struck in the ear by a bullet in a shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump, speaking at an event on the X Spaces platform late Monday, blamed Democrats' rhetoric for encouraging would-be assassins and said his Secret Service needed to be beefed up. But he praised the agent who shot the suspect and the agent who escorted Trump and his golfing partners to safety in a golf cart.

The suspect left his gun in the bushes where he hid until he fled. Trump also praised the civilian who took photos of the suspect's license plate as he drove away. Trump said the license plate helped authorities catch the suspect a short time later.

“The agents did a fantastic job, the civilians did a phenomenal job,” he said.

Trump's only regret: “I would have loved to sink the last putt, but we decided, 'Let's get out of here.'”

Suspect Ryan Routh, who appeared in federal court on Monday, did not fire a shot, authorities said. He is charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Police analyze movements, DNA: Investigations underway against suspect in Trump assassination attempt

Developments:

∎ The suspect never had Trump in his sights and did not fire any shots, said Ronald Rowe, deputy director of the Secret Service.

∎ Trump's visit to his West Palm Beach golf course was not on his public schedule, Rowe said, adding that it was not clear whether the suspect knew Trump would be there.

The Secret Service did not spot a gunman hiding in the bushes at a West Palm Beach golf course on Sunday until Trump was already 500 yards away, raising further questions about whether the embattled agency is up to the task of protecting the Republican nominee. Rowe praised his agents on Monday for foiling what authorities say was the second assassination attempt on Trump in as many months. Rowe called it a “textbook example” of how his agents were able to identify and neutralize an armed threat to Trump.

Rowe said the Secret Service has significantly increased its security measures for Trump since he was shot and wounded in the ear in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. A few days after the shooting, Rowe told lawmakers he was “ashamed” of the security lapses at the rally.

Florida's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, said he would launch a state investigation into Sunday's incidents.

“People have a right to know the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards,” DeSantis said in a social media post. Read more here.

Increased Secret Service presence: Agents foiled possible murder attempt

A “moving bubble” of U.S. Secret Service agents foiled the second assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Sunday as the former president was golfing. AT Smith, deputy director of the Secret Service from 2012 to 2015, said the agents did their best to accommodate other golfers while discreetly scanning the grounds for potential threats as Trump and his group continued to play. Trump's protective bubble of agents covers an area of three to five holes in front of and behind him and uses high-tech equipment to detect any sign of a potential attacker, Smith said.

“It looks like we've been doing the same thing we've always done,” said former Secret Service Director John Magaw.
