Victim injured four times in shooting at dance studio during Zumba class in Back of the Yards

Shots were fired during a Zumba class and photo session at a dance studio in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Monday evening, hitting four people, including a 13-year-old girl.

Two groups began shooting around 8:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of West 51st Street, causing dancers and witnesses to run for cover at Body Factory Nutrition, police said.

When police arrived on the scene following multiple reports of gunshots, five witnesses told officers they were “in the middle of their Zumba class when bullets smashed through the front windows and struck their friends,” a police report said.

Other victims who were taking photos heard “loud screams and immediately ran to the back of the dance studio,” a police report said.

The injured, men and women, were between 13 and 57 years old.

The 13-year-old girl who was shot in the lower back was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition, and a 29-year-old man who was shot in the neck was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, police said.

In addition, a 48-year-old woman was shot in the left arm. She was also taken to the University of California in good condition, and a 57-year-old woman who was shot in the right hand was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, police said.

Several shell casings were found at 5114 S. Laflin St., including at least one from a rifle, the report said. A Cadillac, a nearby building and a city government truck were damaged.

The victims were the unintended targets of the attack and Area One detectives are investigating.

No arrests were made.
