The Eastern Cape police leadership is mourning the death of a member who died in an accident near Tsolo on Monday.

Provincial spokesman Lt. Col. Siphokazi Mawisa said four other officers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

She said the five officers from the Mthatha dog squad were following a tip-off about a house robbery in Port Edward, where the suspects were heading towards Qumbu.

Mawisa said officers were travelling in two vehicles when they were involved in an accident involving a minibus and another vehicle.

According to SAPS, one person in one of the other vehicles was injured.

The police have opened a case of intentional homicide for further investigation.

Mawisa, meanwhile, said the two armed robbery suspects were finally arrested.

She said Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene and her superiors had expressed their condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the 49-year-old warrant officer.
