Infarction drama about Sergio Pere's father Antonio

Sergio Perez experienced a great disappointment at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. Shortly before the end of the Formula 1 race, the Red Bull driver crashed into Carlos Sainz's Ferrari while battling for third place – a scoreless result instead of a podium finish. Meanwhile, in Perez's home country, a drama was unfolding involving his father Antonio.

As reported by “RacingNews365” and others, Antonio Perez Garibay suffered a pre-infarction on race Sunday in Baku. Perez was found unconscious in his bathroom and taken to a hospital in Mexico City.

According to the hospital's press department, the fainting spell occurred immediately after his son's accident with Sainz. Antonio Perez confirmed the death to “Mediotiempo”: “Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the crash may have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted,” said the 65-year-old.

According to the hospital, the Formula 1 driver's father is doing well again.

Perez had a heated duel with Sainz in the final phase of the Azerbaijan GP. With two laps to go, the Spaniard braked Perez in turn one and moved into third place behind Scuderia colleague Charles Leclerc. However, Sainz then lost momentum on the left-hand bend and Perez countered on the short back straight.

Formula 1 in Baku: Perez counterattack against Sainz goes wrong

However, the action went completely wrong. Perez shot Sainz in the back, both landed in the wall and were eliminated. Perez then stormed angrily towards his opponent's red wreck and even gave Sainz a light punch on the helmet.

It was particularly bitter for Perez: After what felt like an eternity, the 34-year-old was finally faster than his Red Bull colleague Max Verstappen in Baku and could have scored important points for the team in the fight for the constructors' championship. That was the end. He left Azerbaijan “incredibly frustrated” and was “very sad for my team,” the Mexican said afterwards.

Red Bull had lost the lead in the team standings to McLaren at the Caspian Sea.
