Utah QB Cameron Rising reportedly out for game against Utah State due to hand injury

Utah QB Cameron Rising appears to have avoided a serious injury to his right hand.

According to ESPN's Bill Riley, Rising will miss Saturday's game against Utah State but is expected to return for the Utes' Sept. 21 game against Oklahoma State. Rising injured his right hand late in the first half of Utah's Week 2 game against Baylor.

Rising ran left toward the sideline and was forced out of bounds after losing the ball. Rising fell into the drink station on Baylor's sideline and appeared to hit his hand on a cooler.

His hand was bloody after the game, and he went to the locker room before halftime. Rising returned to the sidelines in the second half without his uniform and was replaced by freshman Isaac Wilson for the rest of the game. While on the sidelines, Rising had a bandage wrapped around his middle and ring fingers.

Wilson will start against Utah State in Rising's absence. He completed 4 of 9 passes for 30 yards as Utah beat the Bears 23-12. The Utes failed to score in the second half after taking a 23-3 halftime lead.

Rising, a seventh-year senior, has thrown seven touchdown passes in less than two games this season. He opened the season with five touchdown passes against Southern Utah and was 8 of 14 for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against Baylor.

Rising showed how important he is to the Utes when the Utah offense struggled in 2023 while he was injured. Rising missed the entire season after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the Rose Bowl in 2022. Bryson Barnes, one of the quarterbacks used during his absence, transferred to Utah State in the offseason and is scheduled to suit up for the Aggies on Saturday.
