8-year-old girl takes 25-minute drive to Target. This is what happened

An 8-year-old Ohio girl returned home safely after taking her mother's car and driving to Target 25 minutes away while her family and police searched for her.

According to a Bedford police dispatch report obtained by TODAY.com, officers responded to a 911 call just before 9 a.m. on Sept. 15 after the family discovered the girl was missing.

They reported that the 8-year-old had last been seen by the family almost two hours earlier.

A neighbor gave the family and officers footage from his Ring camera, which shows the young girl getting into a 2020 Nissan Rogue alone and driving away around 7 a.m.

Police in the area searched for the missing child before officers in neighboring Bainbridge discovered the car in a Target parking lot.

According to the police report, the Bainbridge Target is just over 11 miles southwest of the child's home. Google Maps estimates that the fastest route — obeying the average speed limit — would take an adult driver about 25 minutes.

Officers found the girl at Target and her family came to pick her and the car up.

According to the report, the child said he knocked over a mailbox on the way to the store.

On Facebook, Bedford police joked about the incident.

“I'm not sure what she bought or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%,” Bedford police wrote in the post. “We let her finish her Frappuccino. We mean no harm.”

Many commenters expressed how impressed they were that such a young child could enjoy a ride behind the wheel.

“This is the best of all the kid driving stories,” wrote one commenter. “Long distance and she did everything right.”

“I'm not going to lie. This sounds like something my 8 year old self would have done,” wrote another.
