Nighttime breathing pauses: Apple gives a closer look at the watchOS feature | News

The official release of watchOS 11 has already been launched and once again it is primarily health functions that are the focus of a major release for the watch. The activity rings can now be paused and the associated goals can be configured for each day of the week. The vital signs app records selected parameters during sleep and draws attention to irregularities. This also includes indications of possible apnea: the smartwatch detects nocturnal pauses in breathing and warns users of the health risks associated with this condition.

Acceleration sensor is used to measure
There are a number of wearables on the market that promise to detect apnea. These usually use a blood oxygen sensor built into the device. The Apple Watch also has one, but it is the cause of a patent dispute in the USA. In a new document, Apple discusses the clinical validation of the feature and provides details on how it works. The watch records the data using the acceleration sensor to measure large and subtle movements of the body. Interruptions in the breathing pattern are recorded and the watch issues a warning message indicating possible apnea if the respiratory disturbance values are elevated over a period of 30 days.

Function already available in this country
Apple explains that the feature is not suitable for people who have already been diagnosed with apnea. At least an Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 with watchOS 11 is required. If users receive a corresponding indication of breathing pauses, further clarification is required from a doctor and, if necessary, a sleep laboratory. The function is now available in more than 150 countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Australia and Canada, however, are currently excluded (see here).
