Woman charged with murder after man beaten and stabbed to death

The death last week of a Bloomington man who was stabbed and beaten three weeks earlier means the woman accused of attacking him is now facing murder charges.

On September 13, the Monroe County District Attorney's Office amended the attempted murder charge against 25-year-old Briley Shayne Turner to murder. The Bloomington woman had been jailed on attempted murder charges and $100,000 bail. She is now being held without bail in the Monroe County Jail; charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder remain.

On Sept. 11, the investigator assigned to the case learned that 36-year-old Michael Ray Hodge had died that day at IU Health Methodist Hospital. An autopsy determined that his death was “the result of complications of multiple traumatic sharp and blunt force injuries” sustained Aug. 18 at Turner's Kinser Flats apartment, according to the investigator's latest version of the case.

A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Hodges' funeral will be held in Bloomington on September 18.

Hodge told police who arrived at the scene that he and Turner “were about to take a shower together when Briley struck Michael with a baseball bat in the apartment bathroom,” according to the probable cause affidavit in the case. “After being struck with the baseball bat, Briley began stabbing him all over his body, according to Michael.”

He said he tried to grab the knife to take it away from Turner when he was stabbed, but suffered cuts to his hands in the process.

Before he was taken to the hospital, he told police the attack was unprovoked. “Michael stated there was no argument or reason for the attack,” the affidavit states.

Hodge was flown by helicopter to the Methodist Center for treatment, including surgery to remove a knife blade that had broken off in his body during the bathroom attack.

Hodge suffered two lacerations to his lower right abdomen, a stab wound to his neck, stab wounds to his upper chest, left rib cage, scrotum, left quadriceps, lower left hip, upper right buttocks, and lacerations to his right forehead and left cheek. His left arm was broken and had a protruding bone.

Turner, who police found on a couch in her apartment wearing clothes stained with Hodge's blood, was unharmed. She told police that Hodge tried to get her to swallow something, but she refused and fought back.
