Two people were killed in eastern China's Jiangsu province as Typhoon Bebinca brought torrential rain and strong winds before developing into a tropical storm, state media reported on Tuesday.

Two residents of the city of Zhoushi, about 80 kilometers northwest of Shanghai, were hit by a falling high-voltage power line and suffered an electric shock on Monday, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

These are the only known deaths so far related to Hurricane Bebinca, which swept through the megacity of Shanghai and neighboring provinces on Monday, flooding streets, breaking tree branches and knocking out power in some homes.

A resident of Shanghai's Chongming Island was also reportedly injured by a falling tree.

More than 414,000 people were evacuated from the strong winds and torrential rains. Schools were closed and people were urged to stay in their homes while flights, ferries and train services were suspended.

The typhoon, which weather officials said was the strongest since at least 1949, weakened as it moved inland and was downgraded to a tropical storm around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The National Meteorological Center warned that parts of Anhui, Henan, Hebei, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces could experience heavy or torrential rain with up to 20 centimeters of precipitation until Wednesday afternoon.

In Shanghai, the streets were cleared by Monday evening and traffic returned to normal. Power was fully restored by midnight on Tuesday, authorities said.
