iPhone 16 or Apple Watch Series 10, this is the new hardware that Apple recently presented to the public. But if you don't want to buy a new smartphone or smartwatch this year, you'll still get some improvements as usual. These will land on already known hardware this September in the form of iOS 18 and watchOS 11, among others. Apple has now revealed in a press release when all of these updates will be released.

iOS 18: When will the iPhone update be released?

You can now install the new iOS 18 on your iPhone. The installation requires at least an iPhone XR or iPhone SE (2nd generation). This is the same hardware as iOS 17. In short: If your smartphone is running iOS 17, it will also be compatible with iOS 18.

However, things get a little more complicated if you want to use Apple Intelligence. For this, the California-based company requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. The first AI features will be available in the US as part of iOS 18.1 in October. It is still unknown when they will be available in the EU.

New software for iPad, Apple Watch and more

But in addition to iOS 18, you can also expect updates for Apple's other hardware this year. iPadOS 18 and watchOS 11 will be released at the same time as the iOS update. Please note that you will need an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer to install the update for the smartwatch. The Watch SE (2nd generation) is also still supported. The Series 4, Series 5 and Watch SE (1st generation) will therefore no longer receive any major updates from this year.

The update for the Mac in the form of macOS Sequoia was also released on September 16, 2024. The same date also applies to owners of an Apple Vision Pro, who will then be able to install visionOS 2.0 on it.
