Teenage girls tell how they felt 'vulnerable' and 'scared' after being raped by three men on a stag night in Newcastle

One of three teenagers raped by three men at a stag party has said the sexual assault left her “terrified of facing the world”.

Maurice Hawell, 30, Andrew David, 30, and Marius Hawell, 23, rented an Airbnb on Parry Street in Newcastle, north of Sydney, for a weekend in February 2022 to celebrate Maurice's upcoming wedding.

The apartment building became the scene of a horrific nightmare for two 18-year-old women and a 19-year-old woman who were raped by the trio within two nights.

David and Marius appeared in the New South Wales District Court on Tuesday to be sentenced for sexually abusing the three teenagers. Maurice faces a similar hearing on Wednesday.

The trio were found guilty earlier this year of participating in a joint criminal conspiracy to sexually assault the women after a trial lasting several weeks in the New South Wales District Court.

The 19-year-old victim told the court that she was “terrified of facing the world” after being sexually abused by Maurice and David in a dark room in front of Marius.

She told the court that in the months that followed she “felt vulnerable,” “suffered panic attacks,” and “could not leave the house alone.”

“I was constantly surrounded by friends and wanted to be left alone. This made me feel like I was completely losing myself,” the victim explained.

“I started blaming myself for allowing it to happen.”

The teenager said she spent countless sleepless nights thinking about what she could have done differently to prevent the traumatic gang rape.

During the trial, she testified that Maurice approached her on the street and, using a false name, persuaded her to come to the Airbnb for a pre-party.

Instead of giving her something to drink, Maurice pushed her onto a bed and asked her to have a threesome with him and David.

Despite her refusal, the 19-year-old said David knelt on her shoulders and put his penis in her mouth while Maurice raped her.

The court was told that in her haste to leave the apartment, the woman put her trousers on backwards and then “sobbed”.

One of the 18-year-old victims said Friday night's gang rape had had a “massive emotional impact” on every aspect of her life.

She and a friend said they were tied to beds and abused when they went into a bedroom to get their phones while trying to leave the Airbnb.

“This event has made me no longer trust the people around me,” she said.

“I couldn’t trust any man around me.”

The 18-year-old said she constantly has flashbacks and feels guilty about the traumatic incident, which has affected her view of the world.

During the trial, she told the court that she was raped by a man she could not see while another man knelt on her arms and pushed his penis into her mouth.

At the same time, the other 18-year-old recalled being held down on the neighboring bed and stripped naked by a “swarm” of men before being sexually assaulted.

Although the teenagers could not see their attackers, the jury found that David, Maurice and Marius were responsible for the gang rapes.

All three men continue to protest their innocence. Maurice and David claim the sex was consensual, while Marius argues that he did not engage in any sexual activity during the stag weekend.

They have been in custody for two months since the jury returned their guilty verdicts.
