Magareta Bösl: “Make sure that the default protection also applies in the event of intent on the part of the person causing the damage and that it includes active legal protection to enforce claims for damages.”

Private liability insurance covers claims for damages if someone else has been harmed. But who protects you if you are the victim of a violent crime and nothing can be done for you from the person who caused the damage?

Time and again, we read in the media about cases where unsuspecting citizens have become victims of a violent crime. This can be, for example, a punch, a knife stab, a shooting spree or as a result of an attack. “Basically, according to the German Civil Code, anyone who culpably harms another person is obliged to pay compensation,” explains claims expert Margareta Bösl from Universa Insurance. However, there are also cases in which, despite a claim for compensation, you get nothing because there is nothing to be gained from the other person's finances and there is no liability protection. Newer private liability tariffs therefore provide for claim default cover, says Bösl.

“When taking out a policy, however, you should make sure that the default protection also applies in the event of the perpetrator's intent and that it includes active legal protection to enforce claims for damages,” recommends Bösl. Only then will you, as a victim or survivor, be well prepared for an emergency. With newer tariffs, the default cover can either be insured as an additional module or is automatically included in the service package. Good tariffs also offer protection for victims of violence and also pay compensation in the event of intentional personal injury caused by perpetrators who cannot be identified, says the expert.
