Police say shots were fired at children playing in Beaver County Park

ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (KDKA) — Gunfire in Beaver County sent a group of children playing in a park running for their lives, and the scene was caught on video. Neighbors in Aliquippa say this is not the first time there has been a shooting in the park.

Children were playing basketball on the court at Third Avenue Community Park in Aliquippa on Sunday when a man jumped out of his car and shot at them. Concerned neighbors in the area say something must be done.

The sound of gunfire, captured by a doorbell camera Sunday afternoon, startled neighbors who live near the park in Aliquippa. They say they were inside watching football when they heard a loud commotion outside.

“My sister came over and told me about it. And when I came out, the police were already there,” said James Tigner, who lives nearby.

Doorbell camera footage shows the horrific moments that unfolded in the park when children began screaming and running away from the basketball courts. Then shots rang out.

During the investigation, the children and other witnesses told police that a man drove to the basketball court in a black Jeep, got out and started shooting in their direction.

“Most of the kids up there don’t even live around here,” Tigner said.

Tigner says there is nothing but trouble in the park. It is not the first time that shots have been fired on a street where predominantly elderly people live. He is calling on the city to take the violence more seriously before someone is killed.

“If they put video cameras up there above the playground, this problem probably wouldn't exist,” Tigner said.

“Then the police would see what was going on up there,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tinger takes the initiative and installs its own doorbell camera.

“I was going to get one anyway, but I said I better do it now,” he said.

According to police, no one has been arrested at this time and investigations are ongoing.
