Two years after Highway 52 shooting, police file murder charges | News

NORTH CHARLESTON – Police made the first arrest in connection with a fatal shooting in May 2022 after stopping a suspect during a traffic stop.

Kylil Amir Smith, 20, briefly fled on foot after police stopped him on Otranto Road on September 16. He was arrested and charged with the murder of 19-year-old Malik Lipscomb.

Lipscomb died several days after being shot on the Highway 52 interchange near Ashley Phosphate Road on May 1, 2022.

Jail records show that Smith was arrested later that summer for marijuana possession and illegal possession of a firearm. He was released the next day on $25,000 bail.

His arrest is the first in a case that dates back more than two years. Three other people between the ages of 18 and 20 were also shot that night but survived, said Harve Jacobs, spokesman for North Charleston police.

An accident report said one of the victims was “hysterically” calling into his cellphone, screaming that another vehicle had opened fire on them before heading the wrong way onto Interstate 26.

The investigation is ongoing, Jacobs said.
