Man pleads guilty to assault in October 2022 shooting in northeast Columbia

COLUMBIA, Missouri (KMIZ)

A Columbia man pleaded guilty to three counts, including assault, in a 2022 shooting in northeast Columbia.

Anthony Smith Jr. pleaded guilty on Friday to first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Court documents in previous reports show that the victim was shot in the chest on October 12, 2022, during a drug deal involving marijuana near Indian Hills Park. The victim reportedly told police that two people pointed a gun at him and he was shot by one of them. The victim had driven a vehicle into several parked vehicles near the intersection of Kelsey and Shamrock Drive after being shot, according to previous reports.

Previous reports indicate that Smith allegedly sent a text message to Tyler Lopinto, a second defendant in the shooting, saying he needed transportation for the robbery.

Lopinto, 18, of Columbia, is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He is being held without bail in the Boone County Jail. Lopinto's hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 7, at 8 a.m. and will be broadcast via video from the jail.
