Police: Two passengers die in a fire accident involving an electric car and suffer burns beyond recognition

Two people were killed and burned beyond recognition when the driver of an electric car jumped the sidewalk and crashed into a White Plains apartment building on Monday, police said.

The driver of a vehicle, believed to be a Tesla, lost control, drove onto the sidewalk and struck a tree and a building on Battle Avenue, said David Chong, White Plains' safety commissioner.

The car literally “exploded” and caused significant fire damage to the building, Chong said.

Police said officers and firefighters had freed the burning car from the building.

Two other residents of the building were treated and released by emergency services for unspecified injuries.

A passerby who was walking past the scene of the accident was injured by shrapnel from the accident and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

As of Monday afternoon, police had not yet identified anyone involved in the accident.
