Teenager charged after alleged stabbing in Kashechewan

KASHECHEWAN – A teenager faces charges in the stabbing death of a woman in a remote northern Ontario community.

On Saturday afternoon (September 14), officers from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) were called to a robbery at a residential building in Kashechewan.

At the scene, police found an injured woman who was taken to the nursing station for treatment. The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, NAPS says.

According to police, the suspect – a young girl – came home and confronted the victim, who was attacked with a knife. The victim and the accused know each other.

Later that day, a 16-year-old girl from Kashechewan First Nation was arrested. Her name has not been released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

She is accused of grievous bodily harm and dangerous possession of weapons.

She appeared for a bail hearing on Sunday and was taken into custody.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
