Two officers in hospital, suspect dead after chase and shooting in Des Moines, Iowa, police say

Two patrol officers in Des Moines, Iowa, were hospitalized after being hit in a shooting early Monday morning.

According to police, officers attempted to make a traffic stop shortly before 2 a.m., but the driver, an adult male, did not stop. During the pursuit, the suspect left the roadway and caused an accident.

When officers tried to arrest the suspect, he “shot at them with a pistol,” police said. Officers returned fire and shot the man.

The officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. They are expected to survive their injuries. Police confirmed that the suspect has died.

The Des Moines Police Department and the Iowa Department of Public Safety are investigating.
