Cong’s Udit Raj: NDA’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ plans are just a diversion

New Delhi, September 16 (IANS): Congress MP Udit Raj on Monday expressed strong reservations over the NDA's proposed 'One Nation, One Election' slogan, saying it was a mere diversionary tactic. He alleged that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was using it as a “tool” to divert attention from the real issues and evade pressure over its failures on many fronts.

Udit Raj told IANS, “This government sometimes changes the names of cities and renames some, but it is cold-footed when it comes to taking solid measures for stable economic growth. All sectors, including health and education, are ignored till date.”

“We reject the idea of 'one nation, one election' because it runs counter to parliamentary democracy,” he added.

He further stated that there has been a lot of centralisation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and this method of consolidating power is tantamount to a presidential system on the one hand, adding that it will cause serious damage to the country.

The Congress leader further said that the BJP's web of deception will not last long and people will soon see through its schemes.

To support his claim, he pointed to the BJP's recent losses in the holy cities of Ayodhya and Badrinath, saying they were a clear indication of a shift in the party's voter base.

“The BJP will face defeat, not only in the heart of the Hindi areas but also in the Hindu-dominated district of Jammu,” he said, reacting to the apparent transformation of Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.

“The BJP's defeat in Kashmir is certain, but even in Jammu, people are not happy with the government,” he told IANS, adding that the number of martyrs in the Kashmir Valley has not decreased in the past few years.

In his speech on the 100 days of Modi 3.0, Udit Raj said that this tenure has worsened the situation rather than improving it.

“They claimed that infrastructure would be the hallmark of their third term, but the collapse of buildings has exposed their false promises. Roads, railways, airports, buildings… everything is being damaged,” he said, citing examples such as the leak in Parliament House, the collapse of buildings like the Shivaji statue in Maharashtra and others.
