Justice ministers welcome strengthening of stalking protection

Justice Minister Naomi Long has welcomed progress in improving stalking protection in Northern Ireland.

Since the introduction of the Stalking Act in April 2022, approximately 57 people have been convicted of stalking and threatening or abusive behaviour. During the same period, more than 4,500 PSNI officers/staff and 135 prosecutors responsible for dealing with stalking cases have attended training and approximately 449 files have been referred from the PSNI to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

Minister Long said: “I welcome the progress that has been made in implementing this Bill. It will provide greater protection for all those affected by stalking in our communities.

“I am grateful to our justice partners who are doing their part to bring about meaningful change for victims and train their organizations.”
