The young German driver Oliver Goethe was involved in a serious Formula 2 crash in Baku. However, the previous drivers remained unscathed.

Baku – On Sunday 15 September, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku featured a number of dramatic moments, including one unpleasant one. Shortly before the end of the race, Formula 1 drivers Sergio Perez of Red Bull and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari collided, resulting in both drivers having to retire from the race.

But that wasn't the only mishap this weekend in the Azerbaijani capital. There was also a serious accident in the previous Formula 2 race, involving three vehicles, including that of young German driver Oliver Goethe from MP Motorsport. But what exactly happened?

Invicta Racing's Kush Maini had trouble at the start and could barely stand the ride. Some drivers managed to get out of the way in time, but for others, including Goethe, it was too late. The 19-year-old rammed Maini's rear and then slid into the correct track barrier.

However, the young German driver Oliver Goethe, who has not had much success in Formula 2 so far, was not the only one involved in the accident. Josep Maria Marti from Spain also collided with Maini's car, which was now in the middle of the track. His vehicle took off, rolled over and finally landed on its wheels again. The race had to be stopped for about 15 minutes.

Despite the serious accident, fortunately there were no injuries and all drivers are safe and sound. Maini, who was also given a penalty for the next race for his bad start, later commented: “I'm glad that no one was injured and that Oliver and Pepe are OK.” That's the most important thing after such an accident. It's a real shame to end the weekend like this because we had a strong pace in practice, qualifying and the sprint.”

Things haven't really been going well for Goethe, who was introduced at MP Motorsport at the end of August as the successor to Franco Colapinto, who moved to Formula 1 at Williams. At the race in Monza about two weeks ago, he only managed 16th place. He was unable to finish either of the sprints, which took place in both Italy and Azerbaijan. The accident now represents the low point in his still young F2 career. (masculine)
