Mike Johnson reveals how Trump reacted immediately after the golf course shooting and what he believes saved him in a second assassination attempt

  • He said Trump was in a “good mood” shortly afterwards

House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed some of his private interactions with Donald Trump on Monday, just moments after a gunman with a high-powered rifle targeted the former president as he played golf at his Florida course.

Johnson, who was on his way to Mar-a-Lago when the agents opened fire and posted a photo with Trump after the spectacular assassination, said he and his wife, Kelly, spoke to Trump about what he called “providence” and that Trump's life had been spared.

“He was in a very good mood, as you can probably imagine, that's just how he is. He's so resilient and I'm really grateful to see him,” Johnson said.

“There is no leader in the history of America who has been so attacked and yet remained so strong and resilient,” Johnson told Fox News on Monday morning. “He is unique. He will not stop fighting for the American people. It was very encouraging for us to sit down and visit with him right after this incident.”

Johnson was asked about Trump's earlier comments that he believed his life was spared when he turned his head and looked at a large screen during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman shot him and the bullet grazed his ear.

He said he arrived at Trump's club in Florida shortly after the former president returned from his golf course.

According to Johnson, an evangelical Christian, it was not luck that enabled Trump's survival after a Secret Service agent protecting Trump spotted the suspect and shot him. Police quickly arrested Ryan Wesley Routh on I-95 after an alert man identified someone fleeing the scene after throwing a gun.

“It's a remarkable thing. And Kelly and I talked to him about it at length. Because that's something that no one can deny. God has given him life twice now,” Johnson said.

“I told him it reminded me of bulletproof George Washington, our first president who escaped being shot as an Army colonel, of the famous incident in the French and Indian War when they all shot at him and bullet holes pierced his jacket without bringing him down. This event occurred, ironically, less than 50 miles from where President Trump was shot on stage in Butler, Pennsylvania,” he said.

“These are not coincidences. This is not luck. I believe it is providence, and we have talked about this. This is something remarkable. This would touch any man's heart. I believe it touched the president's heart. And it is just something he is processing right now.”

Johnson urged Trump to “use all available resources to protect him” and described what he and Trump learned in a phone call from the acting director of the Secret Service.

“And from what I understand, the agents who were with him yesterday saw the muzzle of the gun through the bushes on a golf course. I mean, you know, it's hard to see something like that. Luckily they did, unlike in Butler, they didn't hesitate. They immediately drew their weapons and fired.

He said the agents “immediately drew their weapons and fired,” causing the suspected shooter to throw his own weapon into the bushes and run.

Johnson demanded that Trump provide him with “all available resources” and specifically mentioned a “crew allocation.”
