Floods claim one life, eight people are missing

The police have confirmed the first death from the floods. A man drowned in the Krasovka River in the Bruntál region, and eight people are missing. There is still no trace of the three missing people whose car plunged into a raging river in the Jesenice region on Saturday. A 54-year-old man who plunged into a swollen river in the Uherské Hradiště region on Saturday has also disappeared without a trace. Firefighters and rescue teams were only just able to save several people from drowning. The authorities appealed to the population not to take any risks and, above all, to refrain from adrenaline sports such as boating or rafting down the swollen rivers.

The most tragic floods in the history of the Czech Republic claimed 50 lives in July 1997. The 2020 floods claimed nine lives, and the 2002 floods killed 17 people. Police and local authorities said early warning of floods thanks to more modern weather models was a great advantage and helped protect lives and property.
