He was a 14-year-old student who loved video games and his family. She was a 53-year-old math teacher known for her dedication to her students.

Both were killed in a shooting at Apalachee High School on September 4.

Ten days after the violence, family and friends gathered in Georgia for an emotional weekend to say goodbye to Mason Schermerhorn and Christina Irmie in separate afternoon services.

How you can help the victims of the Apalachee High School shooting

Mason Schermerhorn buried

On Saturday, a wave of red filled the Jefferson Civic Center, where hundreds of people wore Mason Schermerhorn's favorite color.

“There was a whole building full of red and that's just a testament to how many people loved him and how many lives he touched,” said family friend Melody Blouin.

There was hardly a dry eye in the audience. Those who knew him best, including his parents, shared fond memories of him and spoke of his radiant, loving personality.

Mason's father, Sheffron Pollard, took the microphone to read a heartfelt letter he had written to his son, in which he apologized, among other things, for not being there to protect him.

Pollard also regretted the fact that he could not coach him during special moments in his life, such as his first date, his first love, and so on.

Mason's mother, Breanna Schermerhorn, shared a moving tribute, saying her son had strong feelings and loved openly and passionately.

She also described him as a protector and someone who always looked out for his siblings and friends.

“Mason was just the sweetest, kindest soul from childhood,” said Blouin. “To know Mason was to love him, and that is evident in everyone here. He touched everyone, and I have so many fond memories of him endlessly talking to me about video games. His favorite game was Kingdom Hearts. My heart smiles when I think of him, but it also cries that he is not here.”

The family honored Mason's love for Kingdom Hearts by playing music from the popular video game during the funeral.

Funeral for Christina Irmie in Buford

In Buford, Christina Irmie's family and students described the math teacher as noble, patient and caring.

Irimie was known for teaching children dance in addition to algebra and was active in the Romanian expat community in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Her service was held at a funeral home in Buford, followed by a memorial dinner at St. Constantine and St. Helena Romanian Orthodox Church.

“We are gathered today to pray for a noble soul,” said one of the priests who led the service. “Family members, friends, colleagues and indeed many people in this country and beyond are mourning the loss of a beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, parishioner, colleague, teacher and fellow citizen.”

The Georgia teacher, who immigrated to the United States from her native Romania more than 20 years ago, was honored with a Romanian Orthodox service filled with chants and hymns. The ceremony was conducted alternately in English and Romanian.

“It was her dream. She always wanted to teach children. She loved children very much and didn't have any children of her own, so she said her teaching was all for her children.

Funerals for the other victims of the Apalachee High School shooting

A private funeral was held last weekend for Richard Aspinwall, a 39-year-old math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team.

“It's just so hard to imagine that someone you've spent so much time with – because this is my second year with the coach – is basically like family,” sophomore football player Isaiah Hooks told FOX 5. “So you turn around and know he's not going to be there.”

Aspinwall previously attended Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville.
