Galveston police officer shoots man after short foot chase

A police officer in Galveston shot and injured a man after a short foot chase on Sunday evening.

On Sunday evening around 7:30 p.m., Galveston Police officers were notified of a domestic dispute at a mixed-use public housing complex. When officers arrived at the scene, a person involved in the dispute told them that the man responsible for the assault was inside the complex and was likely armed.

Officers found the man in a nearby home, but he ran away before later being attacked at the corner of 53rd St. and Ball Ave., where an officer opened fire. Galveston officials have not confirmed whether the suspect pointed or fired a weapon at officers at the time of the shooting.

The officer who fired the shots is OK, GPD confirmed. The man the officer shot was taken to a nearby emergency room, but his condition is not confirmed at this time.

According to police protocol, the Galveston County District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers will investigate the incident.
