Man in 'stable' condition after being shot by SWAT team during nearly 15-hour standoff in western Minnesota

According to the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office, a man is in stable condition after being shot at least twice by SWAT members during a standoff that lasted nearly 15 hours.

According to a press release, officers were conducting a welfare check in Clarkfield around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. On the way, they learned that he had left town and was in a field with a rifle.

As officers evacuated the house next to the field, the man pointed a gun at them, authorities said. He then ran into the house and a standoff ensued.

Officers were unable to convince the man to come outside and called for a SWAT team. The Kandiyohi-Meeker-Willmar SWAT team arrived on the scene. Authorities say the man fired at the SWAT team and police fired back, hitting the man in the leg.

After approximately eight hours on scene, the West Central and BLR (Brown, Lyon, Redwood and Renville Counties) SWAT teams were called to relieve the members of the first SWAT team.

According to authorities, the man left the house around 6:17 a.m. Sunday and fired a long gun at SWAT members. A SWAT member returned fire, hitting him.

The man was flown by helicopter to the hospital, where authorities say his condition is stable.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been asked to investigate the use of force.
