Suspect arrested in FBI investigation into alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Secret Service agents saw a rifle barrel sticking out of a bush about 400 to 500 yards from Trump as they cleared holes of potential hazards before Trump's appearance.

The agents confronted the gunman and fired at least four shots at around 1:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. GMT).

The shooter then dropped his rifle, left two backpacks and other items behind, and fled in a black Nissan. The sheriff said a witness saw the shooter and managed to take photos of his car and license plate before he fled.

“The Secret Service did exactly what needed to be done,” Bradshaw said, declining to name the suspect or give a possible motive.

After the suspect fled the scene, police sent an alert with information about his vehicle to state authorities. Subsequently, sheriff's deputies in neighboring Martin County arrested the suspect on I-95, about 40 miles from the golf course.
