The accused, identified as Gopal Rathod, works as a security guard in a factory and resides in building number 16 of Ekvira Society in Manvel Pada, Virar East. According to statements of neighbours and family members, Rathod was an alcoholic and drank every day. One of the neighbours told police that Rathod verbally abused his wife Bharti, 32, almost every day and physically attacked her after consuming alcohol. Police said that Bharti often insisted that he stop drinking, which angered Rathod.

On Friday morning, Virar police received a frantic call from residents of Ekvira Building about disturbances and screams coming from the apartment where Rathod and his wife lived.

When police reached the scene, they found Bharti's body with multiple stab wounds on her chest and stomach. Police found a bloody knife next to her body and her husband was missing. Police conducted an autopsy on the body and registered a murder case against Rathod. On Saturday, Kalyan police tracked him down through his mobile phone location and he was arrested.

Rathod, who confessed to the crime, said he came home at 4:30 am on Friday and found Bharti talking to someone on her mobile phone. Rathod assumed she was having an affair and started beating her up. When Bharti started defending herself, the drunken Rathod got a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Bharti several times until she collapsed.

“We produced Rathod before the district court, where he remained in police custody until Tuesday,” an official said.
