Presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump is “safe and unharmed” after a Secret Service agent discovered a gun barrel sticking out of a fence at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, authorities said on Sunday.

They have not filed charges or named a suspect, but they said a man was arrested after a witness saw him jump from nearby bushes.

That incident came two months after gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, killing retired fire chief Corey Comperatore and seriously wounding two people. The former president suffered a graze wound to his ear. Secret Service agents killed Crooks. It is unclear why Crooks, a registered Republican who donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project through ActBlue on the day of Joe Biden's inauguration as president in 2021, attacked. Authorities have said he considered attacking various events and ultimately settled on the Trump rally as a “target of opportunity.”

At 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, U.S. Secret Service called local authorities about the shooting. Trump had been on the golf course, but as a precaution, an agent cleared the area first. When he checked a hole, he spotted a rifle pointed at a chain-link fence. Officers opened fire, firing four to six shots. It's unclear if the suspect opened fire. Trump was one or two holes back, up to 500 yards away, authorities said.
