“You are hurting me and my son for your sick pleasure,” says the mother of Huw Edwards’ victim in a powerful open letter to the disgraced BBC star

The mother of a teenager to whom Huw Edwards sent vile messages has sharply attacked the disgraced BBC presenter in an open letter.

She tells him that he has caused her and her son “immense pain and suffering” by pursuing his “sick pleasure.”

Edwards, 62, is due to be sentenced today after indecent images of children as young as seven were found on his mobile phone.

Seven of the 41 penalties he admitted fell into Category A, the most serious classification.

The mother of the young man to whom Edwards paid tens of thousands of pounds for sexually explicit images believes the former newsreader should be locked up.

She writes: “Edwards exploited very young children for his own sick purposes and in my opinion should go to prison.

“It breaks my heart as a mother to know that the man who cared for and controlled my son also portrayed the worst image of child abuse.

“No pedophile who enjoys pictures of small children should be allowed to walk freely on the streets.”

At his court hearing today, Edwards faces prison time and could spend the rest of his life on the sex offender registry.

The distraught mother of Huw Edwards' young victim told the disgraced BBC star: “All we cared about was stopping you.”

She poured her heart out in an open letter after exposing the embarrassed News at Ten presenter for sending her teenage son tens of thousands of pounds in exchange for sexually explicit images.

Edwards is due to be sentenced today after admitting having 41 indecent images of children on his phone – seven of them in the most serious Category A – including a video of a boy aged between seven and nine.

BBC demands repayment of £200,000 from Huw Edwards after scandal

The mother today revealed the years of suffering her family has suffered as a result of Edward's twisted and controlling behaviour.

She says she is writing to “give a voice” to the mothers of all his young victims.

The mother wrote her open letter ahead of his sentencing as part of a new Sun YouTube documentary about the scandal, titled “Huw Edwards: Unmasked,” which will be released in the next few days.

She writes: “I am writing this open letter today so that you understand the immeasurable pain and suffering you have caused me, my son, my family, your own family – and all your victims over the years.

“With this I hope to give a voice to the mothers of the poor children who have been abused for your perverse satisfaction.

“These very young children whose innocence has been forever stolen for your sick amusement.”

Since she exposed Edwards, the mother has had to endure months of insults on the street and online, calling her a liar.

But today's sentencing will finally bring Edwards satisfaction.

In her letter she writes: “You will receive your punishment in court.

“I will not be able to tell the court all the details of what you did to my family. But with this letter, I hope to regain the power and control that you so cruelly stole from me.

“My son was a normal, happy teenager before you came into his life.”

The mother tells how her son fell into alcohol and drug abuse and how his addiction was financed by the money that Edwards sent him from the age of 17.

She writes: “You sent him down a dark path. He developed problems with alcohol and drugs. You knew this, but you constantly harassed him with requests for photos.

“You sent him more money even though you knew he would probably spend it on his addiction.”

Now that Edwards has been exposed, the mother is desperately trying to repair the damaged relationship with her son.

She writes: “I want you to know that although there were times when you were close to me, you never completely destroyed me.

“I will not allow you to destroy us. All we care about is that we stopped your predatory activities and saved our boy.”

The family has endured more than a year of torment since Edwards' behavior came to light last July.

Their initial complaints to the BBC were ignored, and the family then turned to The Sun to have their concerns heard.

We did not initially name the 'top BBC star' in the investigation into the sex images, but Edwards' identity was later revealed by his wife.

BBC staff shocked

By Michael Hamilton, Chief Reporter

The BBC's staff and management were “sickened” by the Huw Edwards scandal, a senior reporter revealed.

Katie Razzall, BBC culture and media editor, said his former colleagues were shocked when it emerged that he had hoarded images of abuse of children as young as seven.

Commenting on the allegations, which were first revealed by The Sun on July 29, she said: “The discovery that the presenter was guilty of such gruesome crimes shocked those in the newsroom, with one BBC employee describing it as a 'discomfort'.”

“Another describes it as 'a bomb.'”

Razzall has been covering the scandal since The Sun reported allegations in July 2023 that a presenter had paid a teenager for sexual images.

The BBC launched an investigation and Edwards, 63, who had worked there for 40 years, eventually resigned in April.

Razzall said of the initial allegations: “It was a challenge for me and my colleagues to report on this story.”

She added: “Still, no one was prepared for what was to come.”

Our stories finally led to an apology from BBC senior staff in April this year following an internal investigation.

But the family remains angry that BBC director Tim Davie allowed Edwards to resign despite knowing that police were investigating him on serious child abuse allegations.

Her son admitted in a newspaper interview last month that he had sent Edwards explicit images and said he had been “manipulated”.

He said: “I felt like he was taking advantage of me, but I felt like I had to listen to him because he was Huw Edwards.”

The BBC allowed the embarrassed star to resign in April, but he received his full pension of £300,000.

BBC bosses are now trying to reclaim around £200,000 of the presenter's salary after he was secretly arrested for storing indecent images of children on his mobile phone that had been sent to him by a convicted paedophile.

In July, Edwards pleaded guilty to possessing the photos, including sex videos of a boy between the ages of seven and nine.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard that he also had photos of other children aged between 13 and 15, who were classified as Category A, stored on his phone.

They were sent to him by convicted paedophile Alex Williams from Merthyr Tydfil, who was given a 12-month suspended sentence in March.

The news reports revealed that Williams told the news anchor that the child “looked pretty young” and that he had other illegal images.

Edwards asked him not to send any illegal images and no more were sent, the court heard.

The couple continued to exchange legal sexual images until April 2022.

Edwards will likely spend decades on the sex offender registry – possibly the rest of his life.
